Why people are crossing a desert?
なぜ人は砂漠を越えて行くのだろうか。

There are also a huge desert called Kavir. I felt "This is a place that must be crossed". Then I decided to go south.
イラン中央にも巨大なキャビール砂漠なるものがある。これは越えなければならないので一路南下する事にした。

There are Yazd and Esfahan where I am interested in visiting after crossing Kavir. This way is a detour, so I will need to extend my visa.
砂漠を越えた先にはヤスドやエスファハン等々、見所満載。かなり遠回りになるから、多分ビザも延長する事になるでしょう。

After Neyshabur, I cycled with other Japanese cyclists; Wataru kun and Mogi kun. Wataru who is going around the world by his bike needs to keep going west. Mogi kun is finishing in Teheran.
ネシャブール後、サブザバールまでワタル君と茂木君と1日だけ走って別れた。ワタル君は世界一周に向け西進を急ぎ、茂木君はテヘランでアウトとの事。最後まで南下を進めたみんな進む道は違うから仕方ない。また何かしらの形で再開しましょう。

Now, I became alone and am heading to Yazd. This town is located 880km south west from Neyshabur.
そして自分が目指すはヤスド。ネシャブールから約880km南西。ちょうどイランのど真ん中。南下し初めて景色はずーーとこんな。今日で5日目かな。

We stopped by a town, Neyshabur, 120km from Mashhad. It's because I wanted to visit to my friend's friend's family. They were very nice people.
かねてから日本の友人から紹介してもらていたイラン人家族を訪問し、2泊ホームステイさせて頂いた。場所はマシュハドから120キロ西のネシャブール。4人家族で、チョー良い人達だった。





Even though I had some companies, they were so welcoming to us. They provided us big meals for every meals and showed us traditional Iranian songs and dance. For us, we danced like a Japanese famous comedian.
男3人で押しかけたのにも関らず、とても暖かいもてなしをして頂いた。食べ物が出てくるわ出てくるわ。そして腹が膨れると踊りや音楽が始まり、日本人サイクリスト達はカトちゃんダンスで盛り上がった。中日は市内観光。

When I left Mashhad, I had couple of Japanese cyclists companies. I met them in Dushanbe. It was really fun to cycles with someone sometime.
マシュハド出発は3人一緒、しかも全員日本人サイクリスト。2人ともドゥシャンべで会ったサイクリストで、ワタル君と茂木君。やっぱペアランは楽しいね～

Today, I reached 20,000km total distance. It is as long as half length of equator is. The distance between my house in Japan to a train station is about 2km. If I had kept working and used a train 265days in a year. I need to spend 19years to make up 20,000km...
そして今日ついに20000キロの大台に乗った。赤道半周分、実家と最寄り駅(往復4km)5000往復分。一年で265日通勤で電車を使ったとしても約19年かかる計算だ。

I am staying at a famous backpacker's hotel "Vali's non smoking homestay" because some cyclists I met, we are supposed to meet up here.
ドゥシャンべやブハラで会ったサイクリスト達と落ち合うために、マシュハドではVali's non-smoking homestay に泊まった。



This place is far from city center but they have nice rate and meal. $6/night $3 dinner $1breakfast. In Iran, they had a black exchange rate that I didn't know. Official is $1=12200Real, and black is 24000. By exchanging black rate, you can travel very cheaply in this country.
中心のモスクには遠いが、飯は美味いし、値段もそこそこ。ちなみに、イランにも闇レートが存在するらしく、肯定レートの倍。自分がネットでチェックしたのは肯定レートで$1=12200リアル、実際は24000リアル。闇レートで考えると、かなり安く旅をできる国です。サイクリスト達とは無事に再開し、楽しい報告会であった。

Vali's non smoking homestay.


Falake-ye Haram-e Motahhar is one of the place where I wanted to visit in Mashhad. First of all, Mashhad is one of the holly places, and Falake-ye Haram-e Motahhar is the center of this city. So that there are many people visiting here from all over the world.
まずイランで行ってみたかったのが、マシュハドの中心にあるハラメ・モタッハル広場。そもそもマシュハドはシーア派の聖地で、その中心がハラメ・モタッハル広場。世界中から巡礼者が訪れている。







In Iran, women wear black cloth, Chador. The mix of modern city and those women wearing chador makes a bit strange view of town.
やはりイラン、女性は黒いベール(チャドル)を着て歩いてる。マシュハドはとても都会的なのに歩いてる人がベールを着てたり、短パンの人がいなかったり、すごく異様な雰囲気。

In Falake-ye Haram-e Motahhar, there were grave of holly person in center. All pilgrims are heading to here. A lot of shinny decoration inside.
この広場の中の中心が核で、聖人の墓がある。みんなここを目指す。中は金ピカ。一心不乱に祈る人々。





To be honest, I was thinking if I should go inside or not but decided to get in because I thought I should have seen this.
実際、墓がある建物内に入るのは気が引けたが、見ておかなければならない気がして入らせて頂いた。

There are a lot of pilgrims inside and praying, praying and praying. In the center, there was a shining coffin. All people here try to touch this. There were people crying, screaming and shouting in the room. It was very strange mood for me. However this is one of real world. Those view, people crying, made me think about the power of religion and how it changes people..This was real world really..It was a great experience.
絢爛豪華な建物内は人で埋め尽くされ、その中心の墓も金ピカ。我先にカンに触ろうと押し合いへし合い。泣き叫ぶ女性や、泣きじゃくる人々。少し寒気すらした。四川省のチベット族地区にある寺を訪れた際に見た、殉教者達もそうであったが、人をこうまで動かす「宗教の力」は何なんだろぉ。何故にここまで宗教に執着するのか。これもまた世界の一部なのである。いや、本当見れて良かったと思う。

Without thinking of cycling, Iran was the first place where I wanted to visit. Also many people I've met told me "Iran was super nice". Now, I'm here!!
自転車で「走る」という事を抜かして言えば、この旅一番訪れたかった国 イラン。道中会う人全てが「良かったよぉ～」と言っていたイラン。とうとうここまで来ました。



This country consists of Islam. The social systems were created by Islam religion. I've been to many Islamic countries but this country is different. People of Iran belong to different group of Muslim, Shia. They more strictly follows Islam teach, so you see more strong Islam atmosphere. I'm not religionist but interested in religion. This country is very interesting for me.
この国はイスラムによって成り立つ国。社会全てが宗教の下に成り立つ国。これまでもイスラムの国々は通って来てはいるが、この国は勝手が違う。彼等のほぼ全てがシーア派で、イスラム色が大分強い。改宗するつもりは全くないが、宗教はすごく興味深いから、イスラムに造られた国をすごく見て見たかった。そんなイラン。よく味わって進もうと思います。

To cross the border from Turkmenistan took me more than I thought. However, this custom was one of the nicest custom; people were very nice.
イランへの入国は多少時間がかかったが問題なく入国。これまでで一番雰囲気の良いイミグレだった。

My first destination is Mashhad. By moving slowly, It took me for 3 days. It was still desert viewing, even more.
まずはの目的地はマシュハド、自分は時間をかけて3日で行った。道中は相変わらず砂漠。ただ、もっと砂漠。

I stayed at local home for 2 nights on the way. This is the first night, Ilyos' family. They provided a big meal. In Iran, seems they eat a lot of rice. The portion is much bigger than central Asia's meal, so I can perfectly get full.
中2泊はさっそく民泊。初日に世話になったイリヨス君家族。豪勢な晩飯をご馳走になった。イランの飯は米もあって腹が一杯になって良い。最低な中央アジアの飯から開放されて最高。



A truck driver I met. We had a Chy by the road. When I mutter that i haven't exchange money in Iran, he gave me money about $6....
道中会ったトラックドライバー。コーヒーを頂き、リアルをあんま持ってないって言ったら約600円分のリアルまで頂いてしまいました。



What a nice people there are in Iran!!
やはり素晴らしいホスピタリティのイラン。この先が楽しみで仕方ない。

Turkmenistan is 1.3 times bigger than Japan, but mostly covered by desert called Gara Gum. This is desert but there were grass and small bushes on sands. The view didn't change much.
トルクメニスタンは日本の1.3倍の国土にしてほとんどがガラグム砂漠に覆われている。砂漠と言っても乾いた木のような草のようなものが生えていて、永遠と同じ光景が続く。



Like the way to Bukhara from Dushanbe, I got a wind from North West which really helped me to cycle. I cycled average 20km/h everyday.
ドゥシャンべからブハラに向かう際もそうだったが、この時期、北西の風がメインのようで、南西に向かうのには良い追い風となって時速20キロ以上で毎日進んだ。

Bike ride in desert is not really enjoyable but there were some I can enjoy. One is beautiful sun-set and sun-rise. Second is beautiful stars. Third is really sweet watermelons. I thought that the watermelon here is better than other central Asia's melon.
砂漠走行って暑いし、つまらないが良い事もある。まず朝日・夕日が綺麗、2つ目は星が綺麗。そして何よりスイカが美味い。中央アジアはスイカがそこら中に売ってるが、ウズベキとトルクメのスイカは特に美味い？ような気がした。

Then, finally I cycled all the way on the desert. It took me 4.5 days.
そんでもってあっという間に5日間が過ぎ最終日。結局4日でほとんどの工程を走りきった。



This was also my last day of central Asia. I stayed this part for 3.5 month total. Until the end of central asia, i didn't change what I thought at the beginning; people in this part of world was very nice. Also, until the end, I didn't enjoy food.... Overall, I had a lot of good experience without serious problems. I enjoyed a lot...
3ヶ月半いた中央アジアともこれでお別れ。中国からカザフスタンに入ってまず感じた「人の良さ」や「飯のマズさ」は最後まで変わる事はなかった。心配していた悪役人とのトラブルや、深刻なビザのトラブル等々、特筆する問題もなく来れて本当良かった。

It's getting fall. The daylight became shorter and shorter. There were clouds on the sky that I haven't seen long time. It's almost 1year anniversary and also reaches 20000km.
季節はもう秋、日も大分短くなって、空には高～い雲。そしてもうそろそろ旅立って1年が経つ。走行距離もあとわずかで2万キロだが、まだ先は長い。一事が万事、気を緩めず進みましょう。

Got inside before 8am; actually the border opens 8am. I think it was because I was tourist. In the Uzbek custom, I didn't get my baggages checked like before. Even they didn't ask me registration forms that they were supposed to ask all tourists. Then I moved to Turkmen custom, they didn't check anything as well. So I didn't have any troubles so got cross the border successfully.
実際中に入れたのは8時前で、観光客という理由だと思うが先に手続きさせてくれた。ウズベキサイドでの荷物検査は全くなく、レギ確認も全く無し。しかも、トルクメニスタンサイドの税関でも簡単な荷物検査のみで、かなり簡単にスルーできた。というわけで無事にトルクメニスタン入りを果たす。



I have a 5 days transit visa. The distance to the border of Iran is about 470km. The most of the way is all desert. I need to check my water carefully.
トルクメニスタンで許された滞在期間は5日間、そしてウズベキスタン国境からイラン国境までが最短470km。ほぼ全ての工程が砂漠。大分涼しくはなったが、水のやりくりは気をつけたい。

At first impression of Turkmenistan was that there were a lot of Toyota running. I thought that the life here was easier than other central Asia countries. Actually, they have rich natural resource like gas and oil. They have propane gas for free.
まず走ってすぐに気付くのが、トヨタ車が他の中央アジア諸国より多い。やはり天然ガスで潤ってのか、生活はやや裕福なのか？ 実際ガス代はタダらしい。

The first big town, Turkmena Bat. As I do every time when I got into new country, I went to a bazar to find a sticker. There were many people came to ask where I was from.
国境を越えて最初の大きな街、トルクメナバット。恒例のステッカー探しで、自転車ごとバザールに突入。いやいや、何人に話しかけられたかわからない。みんな興味津々。



I have some souvenirs like pin-batch and flag for free. People just gave to me. Seemed they were so excited to see a random Japanese cyclist.
何かいろんな物もらった。ステッカー探してんのに、バッチだとか国旗だとか。一応最後にはステッカーも探し当てた。これもタダでもらった。何かトルクメ人は良い人が多そうだ。というか、観光客がいないから、観光客を見つけると親切にしたくなるんだろうね。

I got a sticker eventually and also prepare for next few days riding. Now ready to cross the desert !!
ステッカーだけじゃなくて、この先しばらくの物質も買い込み準備完了。さぁこれからイランに向けて砂漠をブチ抜きますよぉ～

Stayed 6 nights total in Bukhara. The north wind started from yesterday seems to bring a cold air so the temperate dropped a bit.
計6泊したブハラを離れる日。昨日から吹いている北寄りね風のせいか、大分涼しくなった気がする。

This guesthouse was small and quiet. The advantage of staying here was that I could use kitchen.
こじんまりした宿で、泊まってるゲストも落ち着いてる人が多かった。静かでキッチンを使わせてもらえるのが良かった。宿泊費は要相談ですが、安かったのは確か。

Bye bye Uzbekistan !!
ウズベキスタンよさようなら～

In Xiva, I again met Wataru I have met in Dushanbe. He is also crossing Turkmenistan but is going to take different route; from Nukus to Ashkhabad which will be 700km. He said that he just want to make a challenge. We will meet up in Mashhad, so I'm looking forward to hearing how he did it.

ヒヴァではドゥシャンべで長期共にした同年サイクリスト、ワタル氏とも再会でき、楽しく過ごせた。彼もこの後トルクメニスタン。が「チャレンジ」をしたいらしく、ヌクスからアシカバッドの700kmを5日のトランジットで通過するらしい。自分はファラブからサラフスの500kmで精一杯です。彼とはマシュハドで合流予定だから、面白い話を聞けそう。


I had been worry about my US dollars running out, but it has been solved by Wataru. In Uzbekistan, there are not many ATM working. For me, I've never seen any ATM working. So that it was very difficult to get dollars out. I really recommend for anyone who want to visit to central Asia to prepare dollars or euros before coming to Uzbekistan.
数日前から不安だったドル資金不足もワタル君のおかげで解決。ウズベキには機能するATMが皆無に等しく、ドルを調達できる場所が本当少ない。ブハラ、ヒヴァなんて、ドル調達は不可能に等しいんじゃないかな。悪いことわ言いません、ドルはウズベキ入国前から準備しましょう。トルクメニスタン、イランと進む人はなおさら。

Anyway, I spent 4 days total in Xiva and came back to Bukhara. This time was by a bus. I succeeded to take the bus going to Qualshi which cost me 25000, about $9. This was very cheep compare to share taxi but was super uncomfortable.
という事で、ヒヴァで4日過ごして、今日ブハラに戻って来た。今回はウルゲンチからカルシ行きのバスに乗る事ができた(25000UZS 約800円 ローカルは多分10000UZSくらいなはず) ボロバスの乗り心地は良くはないが、値段が値段だから仕方ない。

From now, I need to kill my time till 11th. I want to start cycling...
これから11日までブハラ滞在。もうやる事も特にない。早く走りたいなぁ～

I moved to Xiva from Bukhara yesterday. I was supposed to move a day before by night bus, but they didn't come even though I waited it for 4 hours. So that I took a share-taxi which cost me $20 and came here. By the way, a night bus should be as lower as $10.

昨日ブハラからヒブァに移動して来た。一昨日の夜に夜行バスで来る予定だったが、バスが来る場所で待てども待てども来ず、結局4時間待っても来なかったから、昨日の昼間にシェアタクシーで20ドルかけて来た。バスなら10ドル以下で来れるらしい。

Xiva is called the town of Museums. There are many Mosque, Madrasas and Minarets inside of the casals wall.
ヒヴァは「博物館都市」と言われてるらしいが、その名の通り城壁に囲まれた中に、所狭しとモスクやマドサラ、ミナレットが立ち並んでいる。


















This place is not like Bukhara; a town developed by trading merchandise along silk-road. This was used to be a just normal oasis town.
ここはブハラみたくシルクロードの交易都市として栄えた街でもないみたいで、ホラムズ地方にあった一オアシス都市だったそうだ。

Most of these fancy looking buildings had been build during 18th century after start of trading with Russia.
それが18世紀にロシアと交易が活発になると、街は一変し絢爛豪華な建物が次々と建築されたそうだ。

I looked around inside of wall today with a ticket cost me $10 but realized that I shouldn't buy the ticket. It's because of that I am not a big fan of Museums; this ticket allows you to visit many museums which are rubbish I think, and I could pay in each places.
今日、城壁内見学してきたわけだが、ぶっちゃけチケットは必要なかった。自分は博物館好きな人間では全くないのに、2日パス10ドル(城壁内の博物館等24箇所？見学共通)を買ってしまったが、この券がなくても城壁内は見学できるし、博物館も全くたいしたもんじゃない。個別に入場券も買えるので、入りたい場所に入りたい時間に行く事をオススメします。

I had been a bit frustrated because of that i spend $10 for such rubbish ticket but felt changed by seeing this.
こんな事もあって後悔にさいなまれていたが、これ見て帳消し。





This was a sunset from high area inside of the Casals wall. I'd never seen such a beautiful sunset that sun going into horizon beautify. This is a must see spot.
城壁内の高台から見た夕日。こんだけ綺麗に地平線に沈む夕日を見たのは始めてで、久々に鳥肌がたった。このスポットは是非オススメです。

The day 2 in Bukhara. Turkmenistan border is only 100km away, and this country will be the last country of central Asia.

ブハラに到着して2日目。ここから100kmも走れば中央アジア最後のトルクメニスタン。


The Turkmenistan visa starts on 13th till 17th. I have enough time to see Bukhara and Xiva.
そのトルクメニスタンのビザは13日からスタートするから、それまでブハラとヒブァを観て周るつもり。

Bukhara is quieter than Samarkand and has original old capital remained. I like this atmosphere.
ブハラはサマルカンドより落ち着いた感じで、古い街並みがそねまま残されてるし、すごく良い雰囲気。サマルカンドで感じた「がっかり」感はない。

This town is historically important place of silk-load between west and east. There are many old buildings left in center.
ここは古くからシルクロードの東と西の中継地として栄えた街で、旧市街には沢山の古い建物が残っている。








In this area, the most interesting thing was dome shape buildings where ancient people used for place to trade things. This building has widely opened gates for that camels can go through. There are many of them in this area because people traded different merchandizes in different buildings. There were used to be 40 different buildings in Bukhara.
なかでも興味深かったのはタークというドーム型の建物。昔はここがいわゆるバザールで、中で物の売り買いがされていたらしい。入り口は商隊のラクダが通り安いように大きめになっている。建物によって売り買いする品が違っていて、帽子、宝石、両替などいろいろ、かつては40箇所もあったらしい。







When i walk and look around this old town with thinking how ancient traders come from somewhere very far, i felt I was in part of ancient history.
古い街並みを観ながら、ラクダの隊列がブハラの街を闊歩しているのを想像しながら散策すると、何だかタイムスリップした気持ちになる。



I like Uzbek people because of that as I explained about Uzbek before when I went to Samarkand, they are still very nice and friendly even in tourist place such as here.
前回、サマルカンドに行った時も思ったが、ウズベキスタンは観光客が多いわりに、嫌にスレてる連中がいなくてとても好印象。

Now I'm in famous guest house, Madina, where many backpackers come in and get out every day. Owner's family is still taking care of each of us . When I went to bazar to find a sticker for my bike which was not important thing for them, the owner came with me and helped to find one for me.
今泊まっているのも、いわゆるバッパー御用達の宿？(マディナ)、で、毎日ゲストが入れ替わり立ち替わりするのに、母ちゃんと父ちゃんはとても親切で、よく世話をやいてくれる。自分が自転車に貼るステッカーを探す、というどうでも良い用事にもわざわざ付き合ってくれた。

Anyway, overall I love this place; Uzbekistan and Bukhara. I will stay here another night and go to Xiva without my bike.
そんなわけで、ウズベキスタンもブハラも、とても好印象。この後さらに1日ここで過ごした後、自転車は宿に残してヒブァに遊びに行って来ます。

Uzbekistan has black exchange rate. Official rate is $1≠2000UZS. Black rare is $1≠2800.

ウズベキスタンには闇レートがある。街の両替所でドルをソムに変えると1ドル約2000ソム。闇の両替人に変えてもらうと1ドル2800ソムで変えてくれる。


Sometimes I can get a lot of discount if I pay in UZS; there are some shops and hotels go with official rate.
だから、ドルとソム どちらかで支払い可能な店や宿でソム払いすると、表と裏レートの関係でかなり安くなる場合がある。

This UZS (Uzbekistan Somni), The 1000 bill is the highest, so exchanging $100 can make massive roll of banknotes. This is an example of exchanging for $80.
そんなソム、1000ソムが最大紙幣だから、100ドル変えるとかなりの札束になる。ちなみに80ドルを両替したらこんな感じ。

They should do""Denomination". Even though I have small amount of many in my pocket, my wallet became like a balloon. I wish this is JPY or USD.
デノミした方がよいでしょ。少額しか持ってないのにサイフはいつもパンパン。この札束を錬金術で日本円にできないかな。

Uzbekistan is very hot...It's supposed be cooler than before but is still over 40°. I have been drinking water at least 5 litters a day. I can believe how cyclists crossed this area on July.

ウズベキスタン暑いっす。これでも大分涼しくなってるはずだが、日中は余裕の40度。水もガブガブ消費して余裕の5リットル。こんな中7月に抜けてきたサイクリスト尊敬します。

After staying in Dushanbe for long time, I have my body out of shape. I felt my bike was a bit heavier.
ドゥシャンベを出て4日目、今回、長期滞在した後の移動となったわけだが、いやいやかなり身体がなまってました。かなり自転車が重い。


Even though I was not strong enough, I needed to go beyond. There were plenty of upping down after a town, Denow, 40km from the border. It took me 2 days to pass this area. I had a hard time to cross this area in this temperature.
そんななまった身体にムチ打つようにデナウ(国境から40kmの町)からは2日間山越え。この酷暑の中のアップダウンはしんどかった。

This country has a rich natural resources such as gas. There were many propane gas station for cars.

ウズベキスタンは地下資源が豊富で天然ガスがかなり取れるらしく、ベンジンのガススタと並んで必ずガスのガススタがある。

Donkey is still one of main transport. I always think when i see them that they are so cute. A donkey will be my first choice to have if I can.
やっぱり中央アジアはロバがメイン。いつも思うが、ロバって本当愛くるしい。ペットを飼うならロバだな。

A guy who let me stay in his camp. I stayed at a mobile home where road constriction workers normally stay. He was really good at peeling off begitabl.
道中1泊させてもらったおじさん。多分工事現場の作業員が宿泊する為のモバイルハウス。このおじさん野菜の皮むきがめちゃくちゃ上手かった。






When I went to tashkent by a taxi, I didn't feel how Uzbek are friendly. Now, I knew they were extremely friendly. I got many people saying hello or talking to me on my way. When I got to a town, Qarshi, I did a small experiment to define how Uzbek were friendly. I stopped where many people walk in purpose. Expectedly, I got so many people surrounded.
前回タシケントに行って帰って来た時はあまり感じなかったけど、ウズベキ人はかなりフレンドリー。カザフ、キルギス、タジキスタンと比べ物にならないくらい声をかけられる。現在滞在中のカルシで試しに人が多い場所に止まって炭酸水を飲んでみたら一瞬で人に囲まれてこんな。



I can imagine how Iranian, who many tourists say they were super friendly, can be like.
これ以上と言われるイランに行ったらどうなってしまうのだろうか。
